This painting was inspired by a moment of appreciating the vibrant colors in a tropical paradise.
During my artist residency in Costa Rica in 2024, I hiked a lot on country roads surrounded by lush jungle. One day, I noticed the sun shining through the thin, delicate petals of some bright red hibiscus flowers.
The light transformed the flowers, making them appear to glow from within. I paused to take photos, so I could try to capture that moment in a painting later.
Sunlit Hibiscus is a tall, narrow piece, 12 inches wide and 48 inches high, painted in acrylic colors on a wood panel. The tall vertical format of this painting makes it perfect for a narrow wall that needs a pop of color.
This orientation invites the viewer to look up, to follow the shapes of the flowers, from the cool shadows at the bottom to the white sunlight at the top. This painting has a bold and elegant presence, striking and energetic.
The colors in this piece are intense, rich, and warm: saturated red, glowing orange, and touches of golden yellow that seem to radiate heat. When you look at it, you can almost feel the tropical sun on your skin, hear the distant call of birds, and smell the warm earth beneath your feet.
The hibiscus flowers are painted with a mix of realism and expressive brushwork. The petals are lit from behind in a way that turns the whole painting into a celebration of sunlight.
This painting is about that feeling you get when the world is so full of beauty and energy that you can’t help but feel more alive.
This painting is for you if, like me, you find joy in bright colors, and you want to bring a bit of that warmth into your everyday space.
This painting glows on the wall. It will lift your mood, energize your day, and remind you of the small, radiant moments that make life beautiful.
