Several varieties of magnolia trees called tulip magnolias are popular in the Pacific Northwest. I believe the variety of tree in this painting is called Magnolia Jane.

Springtime Beauty in the Pacific Northwest

This painting is inspired by the showy flowers of a particular giant magnolia tree on a residential street in Portland, Oregon.

After a long, dark Pacific Northwest winter, those first warm and sunny days of spring are particularly glorious. A huge variety of colorful flowers begin to bloom, so that each day there is something new to see in the neighbor’s gardens.

You can watch the magnolia buds as they slowly start to open, until one day, the whole tree is in full bloom. It is a dramatic sight indeed!

In this painting, the focus is on the brilliant white sunlight glowing from the sky in the background. Where the sun shines through the brightest, there are hints of golden light touching the edges of the pink petals.
