Here are four colorful mini paintings inspired by Portland, Oregon’s nature scenes.
This small painting, 8″ x 10″, was a study to work out the design of my much larger and more detailed painting, Summer’s End.
The inspiration for this painting came from a photo I took last year on one of my regular dog walks through my neighborhood in September.
The way the light touched this beautiful flower with its bowing head was so striking to me. After a year, I finally painted the image that was in my mind!
This study is bold and simple compared to the detailed larger painting, and it captures the simplicity in the joy of the moment.

This small study, “Study of Sun and Redwoods,” is a visual exploration of light and shadow, as well as saturated colors alongside more muted colors.
The rough brush strokes are loose and playful. Unexpected pops of bright red and orange peek through the blues and greens.
It is a painting of redwood trees backlit by a brilliant yellow sun, but you can really feel that it is just as much about the process of painting itself.
The deep edges of this small painting add to its bold look!

This small and lovely painting is one of the views from up above the reservoirs at Mt. Tabor Park in Portland, Oregon.
Mt. Tabor Park has some of the best views overlooking the city, and it is worth the hike to go up to the top and look down over the scenic reservoirs and forested park to the city beyond. It is a favorite spot from which to watch the sunset.
The main focus is the row of farway trees reflected in the still water of the reservoir.
A gorgeous pink and gold sunset is spread out across the sky above, filling the scene with a warm light. It’s an image that gives you a peaceful feeling of soaking in beauty.

This painting is called “Wild Sunset” because of the spontaneous feeling of the swirling streaks of bright colors in the sky.
The warm light blue color is bold against deep tones orange and magenta.
A row of trees in silhouette against a deep golden yellow at the horizon adds more drama to the moment.
It is one of those sunsets that dazzles!
