Calendars, Baker Artist Awards, Meaning of Art

November 7th, 2008

What is the meaning of art?  Click here to read my answer!

Also, 3 Things:

  • First: I am competing for a major local arts award and I could use your vote!

The Baker Artists Awards celebrate Baltimore’s artists on the Web with an ongoing exhibition of its diverse artistic practice, and the Mary Sawyer Baker Prize will establish Baltimore’s reputation as a creatively rich and vital place to live with a civic commitment to value its individual artists.

Please take a minute to visit my work on the Baker Artist Awards web site. As a Baltimore artist, I am eligible to win the significant Mary Sawyers Baker Prize or maybe bragging rights as Baltimore’s Choice.  Please go to the site and sign up for an account so you can vote for me!  (Click “Vote for Cedar Lee” on the right of my profile page.)

  • Second: Don’t forget to get your 2009 Art By Cedar calendars! The Christmas decorations are up in the stores, which means the holiday shopping season is officially upon us. Calendars are both beautiful and practical, so they make nice gifts for family and friends…and my calendars are made in USA and support small business (mine!) So you can’t go wrong.

This year I have 2 options, “Cats & Dogs” and “Trees.” I ordered copies for myself and I assure you they are high quality and look great. The pages are thick and glossy and the colors are vivid. Last year’s calendars were cool, but these are definitely a step up!

I can’t believe it’s November already. Before we know it, we’ll be in December with 2009 fast approaching!

  • Third: I would just like to say that I’m looking forward to seeing what President-Elect Obama’s future administration will do for this country.  I hope and believe the future holds good things for us!

Oranges & Sardines Interview, 2009 Calendar

August 28th, 2008

I have lots and lots of great news, but not much time to write at the moment.

My sick dog, Clara, has finally gotten a diagnosis from the doctors, we have started a new treatment, and she is rapidly improving.  (More on that later.)

I just got home from a wonderful week in Ohio & Indiana, and I’m getting ready to leave town again, this time for a white water rafting weekend with my hubby & friends. I have been blessed with many art sales this past couple of weeks, and I am giddy about all the possibilities for new art in the coming months.

I’ll write a longer post to fill you in on recent happenings next week, but for now I just have 2 announcements.

Announcement #1:

I’ve been interviewed by Didi Menendez, author of Oranges & Sardines, a publication featuring contemporary artists and poets.

My interview is now published online, and you can Click here to read it!

Announcement #2:

Art By Cedar 2009 Calendars are now available for purchase!

Last year’s calendar was a spur-of-the-moment decision made in early December, when many people had already filled all their calendar needs.  But the calendar generated a lot of interest, and I got many requests for another in 2009.  This year I am making sure to release my calendar early in the year, before everyone starts their Christmas shopping.

This calendar features my cat & dog portraits.  Each month has one of my animal portrait paintings alongside a quote about pets and their importance in our lives.

Click on the picture to get yours now!  (If you click on “View Calendar Pages” on the bottom left, you can see what the inside looks like.)

Art By Cedar 2009 Calendar: Cats & Dogs

I may eventually offer a second calendar design as well, with different paintings–but that depends on whether I can find the time.  For now, I’m extremely pleased with the Cats & Dogs design.

To all my U.S. friends, have a happy Labor Day weekend, and I will catch you in September!

The Art By Cedar Magnet Sampler Packs are in!

Each sampler pack includes six large refrigerator magnets, each one featuring one of my favorite paintings from the “Looking Up” series. Each magnet is about 5.5″ x 4″.

They come in an attractive box and would be suitable as a gift. Individual magnets make great gifts too–it’s just a small thing, but the recipient will enjoy it every day.

Or, you can keep them all for yourself and cover your fridge with beautiful trees!

I’ve sent some of them to my gallery in Havre de Grace, so I have a limited supply in stock. Of course I’ll order more once these sell out, but get yours now for the quickest possible shipment.

Now, I’ve got some painting to do…

Lots of news

May 12th, 2008

I haven’t gotten much painting done lately, mainly because of my two jobs on-the-side (installing art shows at the local arts center and babysitting a little girl.) Both jobs are fun and rewarding, but I’m glad that they are extremely part-time affairs, because I’m feeling the need to spend some serious focused time at the easel.

I have managed to spend enough time painting that I’ve nearly finished the 6′ x 4′ tree I’ve been working on. I’ll put the finishing touches on tomorrow, if all goes well, and I should have it photographed so you can all see it later this week. The huge canvas is taking up my whole studio.

I’ve also been putting together a project that I’m really happy about–within the next couple weeks I will have ArtByCedar Magnet Sampler Packs for sale! Each sampler pack will include 6 different refrigerator magnets, each one featuring one of my favorite tree paintings from my “Looking Up” series.

Magnet Sampler Pack

These magnets are large–about the size of a postcard. They’ll come in an attractive little gift box, so you could give the whole set as a gift, or you could keep your favorites and give out the rest individually to friends and family.

These sampler packs will retail for $19.99 apiece. I’ll be offering free shipping to my blog subscribers. If you know you’ll want several, let me know so I can reserve them for you.

In other news, I cut my hair short for the first time in many, many years. The new hairstyle is really growing on me (no pun intended!)

Haircut 2008

Last week I made a new necklace. The beads are made of lapis lazuli, iolite, black onyx, sterling silver, and wood.

My garden is really coming along! I think it’ll be pretty spectacular this summer–I’m going to enjoy harvesting tomatoes and peppers in the sunshine, with the scent of herbs and flowers all around me.

Garden 05/12/2008

Next week I’m getting a wisdom tooth, possibly two, extracted. I’ve never had any kind of dental surgery before (I’ve never even had a cavity as an adult) and I’ve heard horror stories from people I know. I’m absolutely terrified and filled with dread. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Next month I’ll be taking a trip to North Carolina. I’ll be at the Twigs & Leaves Gallery in Waynesville all day on Saturday, June 21, in conjunction with an “Art Walk” event happening in the town that day. I’ll be doing painting demonstrations and talking about my work with all the art lovers passing through.

In July, my family is having a huge reunion in the mountains of Tennessee. I’ve been in charge of planning the whole thing from the beginning, and it’s been a lot more work than I expected, but the plans seem to be coming together nicely and I’m really looking forward to it!

In August, I’m going to Ohio for a week to scout out some galleries. While I’m at it, I’ll be attending a contra dance weekend at a boy scout camp in Indiana with a friend. Then in September, if all goes according to plan, my husband and I will be going to West Virginia for a 3-day whitewater rafting and camping trip with a group of our buddies.

I’ve been doing a workout routine and actually sticking to it, and I feel great! My arms are definitely less noodley than they were a few weeks ago.

Art By Cedar 2008 Calendar!

December 11th, 2007

Last year at this time when I failed to produce a 2007 wall calendar, I promised the people on my mailing list that I would come through with a 2008 calendar. I am pleased to announce that the Art By Cedar 2008 Calendar is now available for purchase.

Calendar Cover

The calendar features a selection of some of my favorite nature-inspired paintings that you will be able to enjoy throughout the new year.

* Each page measures 11″ x 8.5″
* Measures 11″ x 17″ when hung on wall
* Full bleed dynamic color
* 100 lb cover weight high gloss paper, wire-o bound
* January 2008 – December 2008, 2009 preview, US holidays marked

Calendar January

You can see all the interior pages and buy your calendar for $17.99 here: http://www.cafepress.com/artbycedar.199515390

And while you’re at it, check out my newly-launched Cafepress store: http://www.cafepress.com/artbycedar

I’ve got shirts, baby clothes, mugs, coasters, tote bags, magnets and bumper stickers too! If you want a particular painting on a T-shirt, mug, magnet, etc. just let me know–I can probably get it for you.

This past weekend was wonderful. One of my oldest and dearest friends, Ryan, took me contra dancing. (He’d been trying to get me to go for a year or more.) It was twirly good fun and I enjoyed it so much that I’m trying to get some friends together to go again this weekend.

If you’ve never heard of contra dancing, it’s sort of like square dancing but not quite. I highly recommend it, even for people who aren’t typically into dancing. It doesn’t require you to have much grace or innate dancing ability (luckily for me)–they tell you exactly what to do, and there are plenty of nice people to help whenever you do get confused. So Friday night I spent 3 hours stomping and weaving and getting spun around. Weee!

Then Saturday night was the birthday party for one of my other close friends, Shenaz. We had a delicious feast followed by gourmet desserts–one of the party guests, a professional chef, cooked a lot of the meal. Then we lit a campfire in Shenaz’s backyard and fed it pieces of the dead weeping willow from the neighbor’s yard. We roasted marshmallows into the wee hours and had a champagne toast complete with a Lithuanian song and blessing.

Afterwards, we went home and I stayed up till 5:30 am watching a movie, The Host, which I really liked. (It is a Korean horror flick–the corny kind, not the scary kind.) I spent the rest of the weekend getting some reading done and being unbelievably lazy. As far as weekends go, it was primo.

Between now and December 17th, I will be taking orders for small framed prints at these special low prices, just for the holidays:

These are perfect as small gifts for family and friends. They will be printed on glossy 100 lb. photo paper and framed. These are not the exact frames I will be using, but they will be similar to this—simple wooden frames:

Email me with your orders, and be sure to give me

1) the titles of paintings you’d like prints of

3) and your mailing address.

You can pay by Paypal or by check.

I’m working on some new stuff–will show you soon!
